IF THERE IS ONE VALUE THAT WE CARE FOR AT ROYAL MER, IT’S MADE IN FRANCE. AND IF THERE IS ONE GARMENT THAT PERFECTLY REPRESENTS THE FRENCH (AND BRETON) ART OF LIVING, IT’S THE MARINIERE!
When we talk about French fashion, it's impossible not to mention this timeless Breton garment that every fashion icon has in their wardrobe. A piece inherited from our sailor ancestors which has not aged a bit over the centuries.
This summer, Royal Mer had the ambition to revisit this timeless sailor garment by creating a capsule of three striped sailor tops entirely made in France. Available in women's and men's versions, Royal Mer and its artisan knitters have preserved the traditional codes of the striped sweater while playing on its volume and finishes.
The women's sweaters, Macha and Maya and the men's Mario version.
This collection involved the collaboration of three local companies, all holders of a Made in France textile specialty cultivated for several generations.
By partnering with these French companies, Royal Mer has succeeded in the challenge of creating a capsule of striped sailor tops entirely made in France, from the jersey to the buttons, including the labels without forgetting the tailoring!
So what is the recipe for producing clothing 100% made in France?
First of all, for a quality knitted jersey, Royal Mer called on a French textile factory located in Aube, Bugis, specialized in the manufacturing and design of knitted fabric since 1956. Committed to the values “ made in France” like Royal Mer, the Bugis company also shares this desire to perpetuate traditional know-how while constantly modernizing.
Next come the buttons of the Macha model. For this, Royal Mer turned to the French button producer, Crépin-Petit de Bernaville. Since 1873, the family business has been keen to pass on its traditional expertise. A mastery of the artisanal manufacture of sewing buttons which was also rewarded in 2019 with the obtaining of the “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” label.
Finally, Royal Mer decided to entrust the making of its woven labels to the French company, Neyret (based near Saint-Étienne). Created in 1823, the Neyret company specializes in labels and textile identification made in France. What does it have in common with Royal Mer? The company's journey through the ages due to perpetual innovation and the desire to perpetuate its expertise and local production.
This capsule of knitted sailor tops is ultimately the result of a synergy of know-how from different French companies who have the desire to promote French heritage.
Going against the tide of fast fashion and its excesses, these four companies have always remained faithful to values that make sense today with responsible consumption and eco-design. It is certainly this approach that makes our capsule collection made in France so unique and legitimate.
In addition to its Macha , Maya and Mario models, Royal Mer is not its first attempt at reinterpreting the iconic sailor top. From Klasel to Bleizen via Krogen , Royal Mer has already, for several collections, broken the classic codes of this Breton garment.
